Over time, “philanthropy” has come
to mean the donating of money, goods, services or time to improve
the human condition. “Organized philanthropy” refers
to formalized grantmaking by organizations such as foundations,
corporations, or other giving programs. Some use “charity” and “philanthropy” interchangeably;
while others distinguish between giving to alleviate suffering
(charity), and giving to get at the root cause of problems (philanthropy). Whatever
the term used, the result is a nonprofit sector richer in resources,
with a greater ability to meet the needs of the community.
